Report IPTV 2014 Business ModelsMathias Birkel, Dr. Klaus Goldhammer, Michael Schmid, Dr. André Wiegand (May 2009)

IPTV 2014 analyses the development of IPTV in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The report discusses the business models and strategies adopted by IPTV platforms across the GSA-region (Germany, Switzerland and Austria).

The report has found that the construction and operation of an IPTV platform is only economically viable for a telecom company with a critical mass of 2.5m broadband customers. TV revenue alone does not make IPTV a commercially attractive business model. Even for large network operators, IPTV is often only profitable due to the overall effects of customer growth and customer retention.

Smaller firms can use alternative business models. A reselling models can be viable with 250,000 customers and more.
